The canton of Bouxwiller is a French constituency in the Bas-Rhin department .

history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Strasbourg district". Some time later he belonged to the newly founded "District Sarre-Union".

With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Saverne.

From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the " Zabern District " (French: Saverne).

Since June 28, 1919, the canton has again been part of the Arrondissement of Saverne.

On March 22, 2015, the canton's borders were changed significantly. The canton ceded municipalities to the new canton Ingwiller and gained municipalities from the dissolved arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne . Before the cantonal reform of 2015, the canton comprised 19 municipalities, after which there were 59.

geography

Until 2014, the canton bordered in the north on the canton Niederbronn-les-Bains in the arrondissement Haguenau , in the east on the cantons Haguenau , also in the arrondissement Haguenau, and Hochfelden in the arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne , in the south on the canton Saverne and in the west and north-west to the canton of La Petite-Pierre .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the 19 municipalities of Bischholtz , Bosselshausen , Bouxwiller , Buswiller , Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel , Ingwiller , Kirrwiller , Menchhoffen , Mulhausen , Neuwiller-lès-Saverne , Niedermodern , Niedersoultzbach , Obermodern belonged to the canton of Bouxwiller -Zutzendorf , Obersoultzbach , Pfaffenhoffen , Schalkendorf , Schillersdorf , Uttwiller and Weinbourg . Its layout corresponded to an area of ​​166.63 km ² . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6704.
