The canton of Schirmeck was 2015 a French constituency in Arrondissement of Molsheim in the Bas-Rhin in the region Alsace .

history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Schlettstadt District". In 1795 the canton was assigned to the Département Vosges and the "District Senones". However, the districts were no longer mentioned as subdivisions of the departments in the constitution of year III . With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Saint-Dié (Vosges) by transferring the communes of the Breuschtal, which had belonged to the abolished cantons of la Broque and Rotheau, to the remaining cantons of Saales and Schirmeck were distributed. From May 18, 1871, the area of the canton was assigned to the Molsheim district and thus again to the Lower Alsace district . The inhabited parts of the municipality of Raon-sur-Plaine remained with France due to the agreements on the peace treaty of Frankfurt , but the forest areas of the municipality were assigned to the German Empire and therefore remained with the canton of Schirmeck. On the basis of ordinances of March 1 and 6, 1873, the canton also received the forest areas of the municipality of Raon-lès-Leau from the Saarburg district and the canton of Lörchingen (Lorquin); As early as November 1872, the municipalities of Belfosse, Belmont, Bliensbach (Blancherupt), Urbach (Fouday) and Solbach were separated from the canton of Weiler (Villé) and assigned to the canton of Schirmeck. On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the newly founded arrondissement of Molsheim instead of the district of Molsheim. During the German occupation in World War II, there were two National Socialist camps near Schirmeck: The Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp was the only concentration camp on French soil from 1941 to 1944, and the Vorbruck-Schirmeck security camp was used to re-educate Alsatians from 1940 to 1944 and Lorraine resistance fighters . On March 22, 2015, the canton was dissolved. All municipalities now belong to the canton of Mutzig .
