The canton of Erstein is a French constituency in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) in France .
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then the "Benfeld District". Some time later (?) He belonged to the newly founded "Schlestadt District".
With the founding of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the Barr arrondissement. On February 10, 1806, the Barr arrondissement became the Schlestadt arrondissement.
From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the " Erstein district " at that time .
On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the Erstein arrondissement, which was merged with the Sélestat arrondissement to form the Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement on May 24, 1974 .
During the 2015 cantonal reform, the number of municipalities belonging to the canton was doubled, so that the canton now has 28 instead of 14 municipalities.

Until 2014, the canton bordered on the north with the canton Geispolsheim in the arrondissement of Strasbourg-Campagne , in the east with Germany with the Ortenaukreis in the administrative region of Freiburg ( Baden-Württemberg ), in the south with the canton Benfeld , in the west with the canton Obernai and in the north-west the canton of Rosheim in the arrondissement of Molsheim .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Erstein included the 14 communities Bolsenheim , Daubensand , Erstein , Gerstheim , Hindisheim , Hipsheim , Ichtratzheim , Limersheim , Nordhouse , Obenheim , Osthouse , Schaeffersheim , Uttenheim and Westhouse . Its layout corresponded to an area of 135.27 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6707.
