Boofzheim is a French commune with 1,381 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).
geography
The village is about 30 kilometers south of Strasbourg in the Upper Rhine Plain between the Rhine-Rhône Canal in the west and the Rhine in the east, which forms the border with Germany. The water-rich landscape is known as the Grand Ried .
Department roads D5 and D486 cross in the center of the village . The community area is mainly used for agriculture .
history
The place is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century. In the 13th century it belonged to one half of the Saint-Étienne monastery in Strasbourg and the other half to the Archdiocese of Strasbourg . At the beginning of the 16th century, Boofzheim came to the Mueg family , who introduced the Reformation in 1545 . During the Thirty Years War , the Swedes destroyed the village in 1636. After the war the place was repopulated by Swiss and Dutch people. After the death of Paul Jacques Mueg, the owner of the village, in 1684, the place was divided among several families.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Boofzheim belonged as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire and was assigned to the Erstein district in the Lower Alsace district . At the end of the Second World War , Boofzheim was destroyed to a third.

On Rhone-Rhine Canal along a cycle path leads up to Strasbourg. In Boofzheim you can book cabin boats for a trip on the 300 km long canal with numerous locks.
