Valff (German Walf ) is a French commune with 1,318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein and the Canton of Obernai .

geography

The municipality of Valff is located in the western Upper Rhine Plain , about 22 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg . The stream Kirneck, which comes from the four kilometers to the west towering Vosges , flows below the town center into the Andlau , which also forms the southeastern municipal boundary of Valff.

Neighboring communities of Valff are Niedernai in the north, Uttenheim in the east, Kertzfeld in the southeast, Gertwiller in the southeast, Zellwiller in the south, Bourgheim in the west and Goxwiller in the northwest.

history

The place name Valff was derived from the Celtic Valva and means river that runs into the flat country . In its centuries of history, the place belonged to various monasteries and abbeys. He was not spared from the Thirty Years War .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Valff belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Erstein district in the Lower Alsace district .
