Châtenois ( German Kestenholz , Alsatian Keschtaholz ) is a French commune in the Bas-Rhin department of the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) with 4188 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located at the foot of the Vosges , about four and a half kilometers west of Sélestat (Schlettstadt). Junction 17 of the Autoroute A35 ( L'Alsacienne ) is between Sélestat and Châtenois .
history
The name of the place comes from the chestnut forests in the area. Keschta or Keschta are chestnuts in Alemannic , so Keschtaholz is a chestnut forest. This corresponds to the French name - from Châtaignier (chestnut).
Châtenois had a certain military importance in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period due to its strategic location. In 1445 the place was sacked by the Armagnaks . The current population of Châtenois has hardly changed compared to the end of the 19th century (3262 in 1885), even if it has since declined by a few hundred inhabitants, among other things as a result of a fire in 1879.
The town's Roman Catholic Church, St-Georges , is a listed building.
