Heiligenstein is a French commune with 965 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein and the Canton of Obernai .
geography
The municipality of Heiligenstein is located about five kilometers south-south-west of Obernai and 24 kilometers south-west of Strasbourg on the edge of the Vosges below the Odilienberg .
Neighboring communities of Heiligenstein are Obernai and Goxwiller in the northeast, Bourgheim in the east, Gertwiller in the southeast and Barr in the south and southwest.
history
Heiligenstein got its current name in 1460.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Heiligenstein belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Schlettstadt district in the Lower Alsace district .

Culture and sights
- The castle Landsberg was built from 1197 to 1200 by Conrad of Landsberg and the Thirty Years' War in 1632 by Sweden destroyed. It was classified as a Monument historique ( monument ) in 1965 . The ruins are now privately owned. They are at an altitude of 580 m. From the upper castle from the 12th century you can still see the high square castle tower with a bay window. You can also see two round towers and a chimney with early Gothic columns of the lower castle from the 13th century.
- The fountain Fontaine de l'Ours from the 16th century has been added to the additional directory of the Base Mérimée .
- The town hall with a statue of Ehret Wantz , who in 1742 introduced the vine called Klevener de Heiligenstein , which is characteristic of this cultivation area . The Kleven Wine Festival takes place on the weekend before August 15th.
- The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St-Jean-Baptiste with a choir tower from the 12th century.
- The ruins of the church of the Truttenhausen monastery .
