The municipality of Breitenau is located in the valley of the Luttenbach , a tributary of the Giessen in the Vosges . In the southwest, the municipality extends to the 607 m high Col de Fouchy on the border with the Haut-Rhin department .

Neighboring communities of Breitenau are Bassemberg in the north, Villé in the northeast, Neuve-Église in the east, Neubois and Bassemberg in the southeast, Rombach-le-Franc in the southwest and Fouchy in the west.
