history

Finds show that the Celts already settled in the area of today's municipality, on an island in the Ill called Noviento . In Roman times, a military road to Strasbourg, the site of a legion, passed nearby. According to the chronicle, which is not very reliable on this point, there is said to have been a sanctuary of the goddess Diana on the island .

The Ebersmünster monastery is said to have been founded around 675 by Deodat von Nevers with the support of the Frankish King Chilperich II . In the 9th century it joined the Benedictine order . Over the centuries, the town of Ebersmünster developed around the monastery, the history of which is closely linked to the history of the abbey.

After the abbey was destroyed during the Thirty Years War , it was rebuilt and then redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century .

In the course of the French Revolution , the monastery was dissolved in 1791 and the monastery property fell to the state. The church became a parish church , the convent buildings served different purposes, from 1829 as a school for the Marianists .

Ebersmunster Abbey Church

The former Benedictine abbey church on Rue du Gén Leclerc

The three-towered former abbey church of St. Mauritius , the work of the Vorarlberg architect Peter Thumb, is remarkable . The church, which was rebuilt after a fire in the previous church and completed in 1727, is considered to be one of the most beautiful baroque churches in eastern France. In the church there is an organ built by Andreas Silbermann from 1730–1732 , which is one of the best-preserved works by the famous organ builder. It was carefully restored from 1997 to 1999.

Every year from May to July, a series of concerts is held in the abbey church, Les Heures Musicales d'Ebersmunster , the proceeds of which go towards the restoration of the church.

Parish partnership

Ebersmunster's partner community in Germany is St. Peter in the Black Forest.
