Peter Thumb
Peter Thumb (* 18th December 1681 in Bezau , Vorarlberg , † 4. March 1766 in Konstanz ) was a builder of the Rococo , in southern Baden , in the Black Forest , in Alsace , in Upper Swabia , on Lake Constance and in Switzerland worked.
Life
Peter Thumb was a son of the Vorarlberg builder Michael Thumb . He first apprenticed to the stonemason Michael Berbig in Au and then worked for his future father-in-law, the master builder Franz Beer . The first major works of his own were the Ebersmünster abbey church in Alsace and the church and library of the St. Peter monastery in the Black Forest . In 1725 he received citizenship in Constance . In 1737 he became a member of the city's Grand Council.
The Birnau pilgrimage church , which he built for the Salem monastery in 1747–1750 , is considered his masterpiece. There Thumb created solid architecture, in combination with the playful figurative decoration of Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer and the ceiling frescoes by Gottfried Bernhard Göz an impressive total work of art. Due to its picturesque location on Lake Constance, the Birnau is today a magnet for tourists and a main attraction on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route . With the Abbey Library of St. Gallen Thumb built one of the most important library rooms of the Baroque , which also today is a magnet for visitors and with the entire monastery complex of the Abbey of St. Gall to the World Heritage Site of UNESCO counts. The east facade and other parts of the monastery church in St. Gallen were built by Johann Michael Beer von Bildstein, presumably based on a design by Peter Thumb.
Effect and appreciation
In Freiburg im Breisgau , in St. Peter (Black Forest) , in Friedenweiler , in Rust (Baden) , in Waldkirch , Cologne , Konstanz , Hilzingen , Singen (Hohentwiel), Waldshut-Tiengen , Weingarten (Württemberg) and Bregenz was a road to Named Peter Thumb. The parish church in Schwerzen is said to have been built according to his model (one suspected already based on a design by him, but there is no evidence for it). The steeple of the Schuttern monastery church from 1722-23 is also attributed to him (but no evidence). The St. Gallen Abbey District is part of UNESCO and World Heritage in Switzerland .
