Franz Beer , since his ennoblement by the emperor on January 31, 1722 Franz Beer Edler von Bleichten , also in the spelling of Blaichten , (born April 1, 1660 in Au (Vorarlberg) , † January 21, 1726 in Bezau ) was an Austrian Architect and master builder of the Baroque period , who mainly built church buildings for monasteries in southern Germany and Switzerland. He was the son of the founder of the Auer Guild Michael Beer and father of Johann Michael Beer , also a master builder.

Life

From 1677 to 1680, Franz Beer trained as a builder with Michael Thumb in the Auer Guild and from 1682 worked with Thumbs Bauten in Ellwangen-Schönenberg and Obermarchtal. He completed the monastery church of Obermarchtal after the death of Michael Thumb (1680) together with his brother Christian Thumb . Beer's church buildings include the monastery churches of Rheinau and St. Urban as well as the church of the Weingarten monastery, begun in 1717, and the church of the Weißenau monastery (1717–1724).

His numerous construction tasks (mainly monasteries and churches) led to the most extensive and geographically most widely dispersed list of works of all Vorarlberg builders. Franz Beer orientated himself on the wall pillar scheme , which he tried to connect with the central building . The double tower facades with the towers set far apart are also striking in his work. In addition to the Bregenzerwald models, his work was influenced by the buildings by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in Salzburg and by Italian architecture.

The Seal of Franz Beer is oval. It depicts two bears with a pair of compasses in their paws. He always signed his contracts with the first name franz without tz , in contrast to the master builder Franz Beer von Au.

In 1705 Franz Beer became a citizen of the city of Constance . Numerous offices in the city as well as his elevation to the nobility in 1722 bear witness to Beer's great social esteem. In 1717 he bought the Alpe Bleichten near Mellau and remained connected to his rural home until his death.

Important buildings

It is difficult to distinguish the work of Franz Beer Edler von Bleichten from that of Franz Beer von Au (1659–1722), also a member of the Au guild.
