Live and act

Jacob Carl Stauder was a son of the painter Franz Carl Stauder and learned the first basic concepts as a painter from him.

One of his first orders in 1710 was a book of arms for the Rheinau monastery . He had a stepbrother, Franz Leopold Stauder, who ran away from his stepmother as a boy and was later lost in the Sicilian military service. Although he was born in Baselland, he mainly worked in the Lake Constance area and in Upper Swabia.

After his marriage to Maria Francisca Bettle in 1716, he lived in Konstanz, where he was naturalized and appointed to the council in 1724. However, he soon went back on business trips and did not feel at home in Konstanz again, so that his family was left alone with nine children. While still in Constance, Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg appointed him to the episcopal court painter, Pictor aulicus , the position that had been vacant for a long time was previously held by Johann Michael Feuchtmayer (until 1713) .

Franz Joseph Spiegler stood in his way as a competitor in St. Blasien around 1740 . In St. Blasien , no significant works by him have survived the fires. Ignatius Gumpp described them in his notes. A picture of Abbot Franz II. Schächtelin has been preserved in the refectory of the Oberried monastery , as well as an engraving portrait in the St. Paul monastery in Lavanttal .

Like his father, he mostly received orders from the monasteries that were willing to build. His work is extensive and varied. Much of him is also unknown, among other things, the names of his students are hardly named. Is secured Johannes Zick 's father Januarius Zick , also Jakob Anton von Lenz and Johann Balthasar Riepp can be seen in connection to him. His preferred painting technique was not "al fresco", but more a process called "al secco". So he painted on an already dry and primed surface and not on the fresh plaster.
