Murg is a municipality in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg in the immediate vicinity of the Swiss border .

Murg is located on the Upper Rhine between 290 and 803 meters above sea level.
Surname
Murg takes its name from the river of the same name , which rises from a high moor near Herrischried . Murg is derived from the Celtic Murgo ("black water").
Neighboring communities
The municipality borders Görwihl to the north, the city of Laufenburg to the east, the Swiss municipalities of Kaisten and Sisseln in the canton of Aargau to the south and Bad Säckingen and Rickenbach to the west .
Community structure
The formerly independent municipalities of Hänner , Niederhof and Oberhof belong to the municipality of Murg . The village of Hänner and the Gaisbühl house (Neumatten) belong to the former community of Hänner. The village of Murg, the Weiermatt settlement, the hamlets of Hinterer Hammer (Murghammer) and Rothaus and the farms of Rheinsberg and Rüttene belong to the municipality of Murg within the borders of December 31, 1972. The villages Niederhof, Diegeringen and Zechenwihl belong to the former municipality of Niederhof. The village of Oberhof, the Zinken Im Sod and the houses of Spittelhau belong to the former municipality of Oberhof.
In the municipality of Murg in the territorial status of December 31, 1972 lies the Hilgeringen desert and the Timos desert in the area of the former municipality of Oberhof.

history
Early history
There was already a settlement in Murg in the Celtic and Roman times. The further settlement of the High Rhine area goes back to the Alamanni in the 4th to 7th centuries, who expanded the existing settlement into a farming village. Murg was first mentioned in 1260 as Murgon , older documents were probably destroyed in the fire of the archives of the Säckingen women's monastery in 1272. Murg was one of the eight main locations of the county Hauenstein and belonged to the Peace of Luneville to Further Austria . In 1833 the village of Rhina , which had previously belonged to Murg, became independent until it became a district of Laufenburg in 1933.

On January 1, 1973, the communities Niederhof, Oberhof and Hänner were incorporated.

The community has a total of 6745 inhabitants (as of April 2011). 3260 people live in Murg, 1631 in Niederhof, 740 in Oberhof and 1114 in Hänner. 3447 women and 3298 men live in all districts together. The proportion of foreigners is 13.0% (876 inhabitants).

The forest engineer Adrian Schmidle was elected the new mayor in June 2007 with 55.6 percent of the vote. Schmidle was re-elected in July 2015 with 96.7% of the vote and a voter turnout of 27%.

The Murg (Baden) stop is on the Hochrheinbahn from Basel Bad Bf to Konstanz .
Since 2014, a citizens' bus has been connecting the districts on working days after 7:00 p.m. as a supplement to local public transport.
Music clubs
- The Harmonika Orchester Murg eV ., Which was founded on April 1st, 1941 in the middle of the Second World War , has been an integral part of Murger's musical life ever since. Annual activities include the spring concert, participation in the Strabufa Murg, as well as an autumn concert and Christmas party.
- The Musikverein Oberhof e. V. was founded on February 4, 1912 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in July 2012.

Murg
- In 1919 the Murg football club was founded. After the Second World War the FCM was supposed to be re-established, but the military government from France did not allow this. As a result, the successor association 'BLAU-WEISS Murg e.V' was created after the Second World War. Today the club stands for football, table tennis and recreational sports.
Niederhof
- The cycling club (RSV) Niederhof was founded in 1923. Today it offers a wide range of activities, such as mountain biking, aerobics, jazz for young people or badminton.
- The Niederhof sports club was founded on November 30, 1963. In addition to the soccer department, there is a women's gymnastics department, founded in 1968. The soccer department has two men's active teams and one women's active team.
Oberhof
- The Gesund + Fit in Oberhof (GFO) association was founded on November 2, 2001 and currently (2016) has approx. 400 members. He has the following departments: oldie fitness, mother-child gymnastics, children's gymnastics, girls 'gymnastics, boys' gymnastics, ladies 'gymnastics, ladies' leisure, every man and table tennis.
Hänner
- The sports club (SV) Hänner was founded in 1959.

- Sabine Spitz (* 1971), Olympic champion on a mountain bike at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . The Sabine-Spitz-Halle in the Niederhof district is named after her.
