Grafenhausen is a municipality in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg and a state-recognized health resort .

Geographical location
Grafenhausen is located on a high plateau of the southern high Black Forest southeast of the Schluchsee between 800 and 1100 meters altitude. About 62 percent of the municipal area is forested.
Neighboring communities
Grafenhausen borders in the north and west on the municipality of Schluchsee in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald , in the east on the town of Bonndorf in the Black Forest , in the south on Ühlingen-Birkendorf and in the west on the municipality Häuser .
Community structure
The Grafenhausen community within the boundaries of before the community reform in the 1970s included the villages of Grafenhausen, with the districts of Geroldshofstetten and Rippoldsried , the hamlets of Amertsfeld , Balzhausen , Dürrenbühl , Ebersbach , Rötenberg and Schaffhauser Säge , the Zinken Brünlisbach , Rothaus with the Hüsli and Signau , the courtyards Schlüchtseehof vorm. Mettenberg
Staufen
The Grafenhausen settlement was founded in 1078 by the Counts of Nellenburg . Around 1082, the Allerheiligen monastery in Schaffhausen established a cell in Grafenhausen. In 1285 the place came into the possession of the monastery and received city rights. Since Grafenhausen was the seat of the court, the house of the adjudicatory count presumably gave the place its name, which was first named in 1095. The Justitia in the municipality's coat of arms still reminds us of the past as a court .
After the Reformation , Grafenhausen came into the possession of the city of Schaffhausen. By exchanging land for the localities of Schleitheim and Beggingen , the village came to the Landgraviate of Stühlingen together with Birkendorf in 1530 . When the land was swapped, around 360 hectares of forest in the Grafenhausen district remained in the possession of Schaffhausen. It is so until today; the forest is managed by a forester paid by the Canton of Schaffhausen .
After further changes of ownership, Grafenhausen went to the imperial rule Bonndorf of the St. Blasien monastery in 1609 and with it in the course of secularization to the rule Heitersheim , which was ruled by the Grand Priory of the Order of Malta.
In 1791 Martin Gerbert , the prince abbot of St. Blasien, founded the brewery in Rothaus . In 1806, Grafenhausen came to the newly created Grand Duchy of Baden via the Rhine Confederation Act after one year of membership in the Kingdom of Württemberg . In 1934 the previously independent places Geroldshofstetten, Rippoldsried and Rötenberg were incorporated, as part of the Baden-Württemberg regional reform , Mettenberg was also incorporated on May 1, 1972 and Staufen on April 1, 1974.

Grafenhausen belongs to the community administration association "Oberes Schlüchttal" based in Ühlingen-Birkendorf .
Christian Behringer has been mayor of the community since 2010. With 52.7 percent of the vote, he was elected to succeed the outgoing mayor Erich Kiefer. Kiefer had directed the fortunes of Grafenhausen for 32 years.
Municipal council
The local council in Grafenhausen consists of the elected voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. The local elections on May 26, 2019 led to the following final result.

Partnerships
Grafenhausen has had a partnership with Combrit-Sainte Marine in Brittany in France since 1973 . On May 21, 2004, a friendship certificate was also signed between the municipality of Grafenhausen and Dörnthal , a district of the city of Olbernhau , in the Free State of Saxony .
Culture and sights
Museums
In the Hüsli local history museum between Grafenhausen and the Rothaus district, various everyday objects from life in the Black Forest are shown. Outdoor shots for the television series " Black Forest Clinic " were also shot here.
In the center of Grafenhausen, the sculpture park was set up, which is the scene of the artists' symposium, which takes place every three years and receives international participation.
In the former Haus des Gastes, which was inaugurated in 1987, there has been a hands-on museum with the title Black Forest House of the Senses with a barefoot path, blind tour in the dark aisle and taste irritations at a dark bar. Even before the museum opened, the tourist information office that was once located in the building moved to Rothaus.
In a corner of the three valleys in the Schlüchttal you will find the Tannenmühle with a replica mill museum, petting zoo and a play area for children.
On May 14, 1763 Abbot Meinrad Troger personally designated the building site for the Grafenhausen parsonage , the plans probably came from Franz Anton Bagnato , who had previously built the similar castle Bürgeln together with the foreman and builder Ferdinand Weizenegger . Local craftsmen and artists, including the master potter Johann Baptist Nüßle , carried out the construction. After a fire in 1928, the building is now being renovated again.
Parks
Also in the immediate vicinity is the 1.7 kilometer long circular path of the Schlühüwana Park (Schlüchtsee-Hüsli-Wald-Naturpark), which leads from the Hüsli local history museum to the Schlüchtsee and contains numerous root figures. The figures were created from fallen tree stumps and protruding roots after Hurricane Lothar .
Natural monuments
The natural monuments in Grafenhausen include numerous old trees, which are scattered over the entire district of Grafenhausen. Among them is the Daniel fir ⊙ , which is said to be around 400 years old and, with a trunk circumference of almost six meters, is considered the thickest fir in the southern Black Forest . It is located in the Schlüchtsee nature reserve.
Sports
The Haus des Gastes houses the Black Forest Hall (multi-purpose hall for sports and events) and the Blubb indoor swimming pool with sauna area. The indoor pool has a lifting floor , which is why there are different water depths during opening times.
Regular events
One of the regular events in Grafenhausen is the Heavy Xmas Festival , which is now well-known beyond the local borders and usually takes place a week before Christmas. Past bands have included Korpiklaani , Powerwolf , Haggard , Eluveitie , Knorkator , Die Apokalyptischen Reiter , Emil Bulls , Disillusion , Van Canto , The Ocean and Superbutt .

The Grafenhausen volunteer fire brigade has been providing fire protection and general assistance since it was founded in 1869 .

There is a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school in the village. Further schools of the secondary education can be found in the surrounding areas, such as B. in St. Blasien , Wutöschingen , Bonndorf and Waldshut-Tiengen .

Grafenhausen is connected to the train stations in Waldshut , Tiengen (Upper Rhine) and Seebrugg by two bus lines in the Waldshut transport association, from which Freiburg im Breisgau , Basel , Singen (Hohentwiel) and other destinations in the Waldshut district can be reached directly . Line 7342 runs as a north-south connection from Seebrugg via Grafenhausen, Ühlingen-Birkendorf and Gurtweil to Waldshut or Tiengen, while line 7343 connects Grafenhausen with Bonndorf . Both lines run irregularly on school days in the morning, but every hour in the afternoon. During the holidays, the offer is a little thinner and on weekends and public holidays there are only three to four buses per day and direction.
Grafenhausen is connected to the road network via the L 157. This also runs in a north-south direction from the Rothaus district, where it connects to the L 170, which leads to Seebrugg to the B 500 , via Ühlingen-Birkendorf to Gurtweil. From Gurtweil you can take the L 161 to Waldshut-Tiengen and the B 34 or the A 98 . Grafenhausen is also connected to the B 314 and B 27 via various other state roads and district roads .
The nearest commercial airports are in Zurich (63 kilometers), Basel (85 kilometers), Lahr Airport (106 kilometers), Friedrichshafen (133 kilometers), Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden (163 kilometers) and Stuttgart (163 kilometers).
