history
Görwihl was first mentioned in 1193 as Gerswillare . Like most places in the Hotzenwald, Görwihl belonged to the County of Hauenstein and thus to Upper Austria for centuries . It developed into the center of the Hotzenwald unions and played a role in the saltpeter riots . In 1806 Görwihl came to the newly created Grand Duchy of Baden . From 1838 to 1839, the Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew, which was destroyed by lightning and fire, was rebuilt by Friedrich Theodor Fischer while preserving the old tower. Unfortunately, the altars of the plasterer Jodok Friedrich Wilhelm have not survived .
As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , today's municipality was re-formed on January 1, 1975 by the union of the municipalities of Görwihl, Engelschwand, Niederwihl, Oberwihl, Rüßwihl, Segeten and Strittmatt. Rotzingen was incorporated into Görwihl on July 1, 1971. Hartschwand was incorporated into Görwihl on July 1, 1972.
In the district Tiefenstein are the remains of castle Iburg , the castle Tiefenstein and an early Wallenburg, the Wallburg Tiefenstein .
Origin of the place name Görwihl
Görwihl is derived from Ger- Weiler . The part of the name 'Ger', Old High German for spear , was chosen because Görwihl had the shape of a spearhead when it was created.
