The place Tiefenstein is located in the Alb valley on the Alb and is a district of Görwihl in the Hotzenwald in the district of Waldshut . The place goes back to Tiefenstein Castle, first mentioned as Tufenstein, of the nobilis viri de Tuifenstein , the Knights of Teufen .

Until 1974 the place belonged to four municipalities and two counties. A school existed until 1973.

In the valley widening of Schildbach (from Hogschür ) and Steinbach (from Remetschwiel ) is the place on the Albtalstrasse from Albbruck to St. Blasien that was created from a former hammer and ironworks (1630) and a mill (1770, today sawmill) . The Albtalbrücke was an important link between the Albgau and the Klettgau , but the "border" between Klettgau and Albtal is not formed by the Albtal, but by the Schlüchttal . The smelting of iron ore ceased in 1770, and the hammer mill's hydropower plants were expanded in 1865 for the Tiefenstein spinning mill . Albtalstrasse L 154 between Tiefenstein and Albbruck-Hohenfels has been closed since Whitsun 2015 due to the risk of rock falls. It is uncertain whether it will ever open again.

The ruins of the Iburg and the Wallburg Tiefenstein are nearby . On the Albhalde below Niederwihl is the Tiefensteiner quarry , in which Albtal granite is quarried .
