Tiefenstein Castle

The castle Tiefenstein is the ruins of a hilltop castle above a quarry in the village of Tiefenstein the community Görwihl in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle, mentioned in 1241, was probably not built by the Lords of Teufen until the 13th century and gave the village of Tiefenstein its name. It can be assumed that the name was also carried over to the family, which only later referred to themselves as Lords of Tiefenstein and no longer of Teufen. It remains to be investigated whether it is actually possible to build the castle or whether a castle already existed before. The Barons of Tegerfelden are also possible builders or owners . In 1272 the castle was destroyed by Rudolf von Habsburg . Former owner after the Tiefenstein family was the Bishop of Basel. Rudolf von Habsburg also destroyed Weißenburg Castle in 1288 .

investment

Two remains of the wall of the former castle are still preserved. 300 meters south are the remains of an early hill fort , the Wallburg Tiefenstein . In the 16th century, larger parts of the complex existed, even though they were already in ruins. The abbot Caspar von St. Blasien at the time described this as follows: "Still the walls of the castle to the thail, but unhoused and disintegrated". In his chronicle, Abbot Caspar also describes the legendary story of the Last Tiefensteiner .
