The Wieladingen castle ruins , also known as Harpolingen Castle , are the ruins of a spur castle at 540  m above sea level. NN high mountain spur on the Lehnbach above the Murgtal near Wieladingen, a district of the municipality of Rickenbach , in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle, built in the 12th century with humpback ashlars from the upper red sandstone , belonged to the property of the Säckingen monastery and was first mentioned in documents around 1260 as the property of the Lords of Wieladingen . In a certificate issued by Abbess Anna von Säckingen regarding the inheritance of the "Rheinsulz" (a farm near Laufenburg in today's canton Aargau) issued on March 19, 1285, a knight Ulrich von Wieladingen " Vlricus miles de Wieladingen " is mentioned by name.

The castle fell into disrepair in the 15th century.

The former castle is the remains of a double door and a Palas . The 28 meter high keep is still preserved.

The tower was overgrown with bushes, including a 400 year old pine tree with a trunk diameter of about 35 cm. That looked romantic, but it was detrimental to the maintenance of the facility. After a built-on gate fell down the steep slope in 1982, the need for renovation became obvious. Between 1984 and 1996, the remains of the ruins were secured and the tower made accessible by volunteers of the Association for the Promotion of the Wieladingen Castle Ruins . The support group continues to take care of the maintenance of the facility.

Archaeological finds

The renovation of the complex was connected with a comprehensive safeguarding of the finds, in addition to pottery shards and numerous stove tiles, many small parts were found such as crossbow bolts , parts of door locks, nails, but also a jaw harp and, as a specialty, a small 13 cm high candlestick made of sheet bronze.
