Schönau Castle (Bad Säckingen)
Schloss Schönau , also called Schönauer Schloss , Schloss Säckingen or Trompeterschlößchen , is a castle in the spa town of Bad Säckingen in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg .
history
The castle was built by Hans Kaspar von Schönau from 1600 to 1680 and was largely preserved in later years despite numerous renovations. Originally the building had four corner towers. During renovation work during the late 17th century, however, the two towers on the northeast side were demolished. Instead, the southwest side received an additional tower in the middle.
When the building, which was used as a brewery in the meantime, was renovated in the 19th century, part of the historical structure was destroyed. In 1928 the city of Bad Säckingen acquired the castle and set up the Upper Rhine Museum in it, in which the history of the city of Säckingen and the Upper Rhine region is presented.
High Rhine Museum in the castle
The Hochrheinmuseum, founded by Emil Gersbach , is sponsored by the city administration and is dedicated to the history of Bad Säckingen and the Hochrhein-Hotzenwald and Klettgau region . Archaeological finds, pictures, maps and furniture are shown. The Scheffelzimmer commemorates the stay of the poet and writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel and his work as a legal intern in Bad Säckingen. In addition to official documents, there are portraits of the poet and various editions of his books, including the rare first edition of the verse epic Der Trompeter von Säckingen (1854). In 1985, after the most recent renovation, a trumpet museum was opened in the castle. In addition, the castle is used for receptions and other representative events.
The name “Trompeterschlößchen” is a reminder of the wedding between the bourgeois Franz Werner Kirchhofer and Marie Ursula von Schönau in the 17th century.

Individual evidence
- ↑ Viktor von Scheffel used this historical process as a template for his verse tale "Der Trompeter von Säckingen". The historical Kirchhofer was musical, but not a trumpeter. See website Der Trompeter von Säckingen .
