The Blériot-SPAD S.510 was a French single-seat fighter aircraft .

history

In 1930, the French Ministry of Aviation announced a competition for a fighter aircraft. Blériot presented the S.510 for this tender. It was the only double-decker that took part in this tender. As a result he was defeated by the faster Dewoitine D.500 , but the French Air Force ordered 60 machines of this type after the demonstration of the good maneuverability and climbing performance by the pilot Lois Massotte to the Minister of Aviation General Victor Denain . The machines were delivered from 1935.

According to unconfirmed reports, some planes are said to have flown on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War . At the beginning of the Second World War it was out of date and inferior to the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 hunting monoplane . It had already been withdrawn from the front line and given to reserve units and flight schools. These reserve units should provide property protection for cities and industrial plants.

construction

The aircraft was developed from the experimental machine S.91 . The prototype S.510.01 had its first flight on January 6, 1933. Like all machines of that time, the machine was made of all- metal construction . Was used duralumin and steel. The fuselage had an oval cross-section. The underbody and engine area were armored. The wings were covered with fabric, the upper and lower wings were supported by an I-shaped handle on its load-bearing structure and each equipped with ailerons. Only the upper wing was swept back slightly. The cockpit was open and level with the recess in the upper wing. In order to achieve better flight characteristics, the rigid, cantilevered landing gear and the wheels were clad in a streamlined manner. The armament was no longer attached to the fuselage, but to the lower wing nacelles. This could make the aiming process much more difficult and favored the scattering of the projectiles. The prototype still had synchronized MGs in the fuselage.
