The castle Rotwasserstelz even Rotenleim , Castle Rötteln , rubella or castle Kaiserstuhl called, is a rock castle on a 343  m above sea level. NN high coral reef rocks of the Malm in the locality of the community Hohentengen on the Rhine in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg . It is located on the northern bridgehead of the river crossing to Switzerland across from the Aargau community of Kaiserstuhl .

history

The castle, built in the 12th century by the von Wasserstelz family , was first mentioned in 1163. In 1185 a Ludwig von Rötteln, who was in the service of the Dukes of Zähringen , is mentioned in a document . In 1362 Hans von Rötteln is a Habsburg feudal man. On May 1, 1294, the rule of Rötteln came through the sale of the Regensbergs to the Hochstift Konstanz . The castle was expanded in 1294 and received its present shape in 1787. Rötteln Castle was the seat of the Obervogte of the Kaiserstuhl lordship (these included: Kaiserstuhl, Lienheim , Hohentengen am Hochrhein, Herdern with the Türnerhof, Weisswasserstelz with the Guggenmühle , Schwarzwasserstelz with Fisibach and Weiach ) and was awarded by the Diocese of Constance .

The rule remained with the bishopric of Konstanz until the Luneviller Peace on February 9, 1801, after which the bishopric of Konstanz came to the margraves of Baden . The last chief bailiff was the privy councilor von Würz. The castle was sold in 1823 for 6,775 guilders to the Oberzoller Mathäus Ackermann. In 1889 it was acquired by the paper manufacturer Lenz in Wehr. He sold them back to the merchant mother from Todtmoos. The castle is still privately owned today.

The castle included: the old tower, the customs office, barn and stables, the rock cellar and the red house, 7 Juchert meadows and 3 Juchert farmland.

The late Gothic St. Antonius Chapel (100 m to the east), the ruins of the Weisswasserstelz castle and the site of the Schwarzwasserstelz island castle (a bunker still stands on the rock ) are in the vicinity .

The Rhine bridge at the castle

The Rhine bridge between Kaiserstuhl and Hohentengen was first mentioned in a document in 1294. A drawbridge was installed on the Kaiserstuhl side . In 1554 a new bridge was built. In 1768 a part collapsed and had to be rebuilt, in 1799 it was burned by the French, torn away by the floods in 1817, again in 1822, torn away again by the floods in 1876, in 1890 the bridge was made of an iron structure.
