The Propstei Berau is a permanent house and was the seat of the provosts of the Berau monastery in the community of Ühlingen-Birkendorf in the district of Waldshut .

history

The building bordered the walls of the former monastery district. It is mentioned for the first time in connection with the demolition of a previous building, also a permanent house or a small castle, presumably by the Knights of Berau , which was demolished at this point in 1597. Here, under Abbot Martin I of the St. Blasien Monastery, a new building was built by the masons Peter and Anton Lorminen. It had one meter thick walls and vaulted corridors, was provided with battlements and a copper roof which, however, was prey to the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War in 1643. A further description of the facilities followed in 1602 under the large Mangolt cellar of St. Blasien.

Like the Berau monastery itself, the provost's office was often a victim of fires, for example in 1577, 1666 and 1711. As early as autumn 1711, two barns were restored during the reign of Abbot Augustinus Fink . The monastery and the monastery church were also rebuilt (although they had already burned down five times). Caspar Moosbrugger was won as the architect .

The Propsteig building was probably always renewed on the extremely massive foundation walls with vaults. The building was representative and had an abbot's room reserved for the abbot of St. Blasien as well as a room each for the dean, the provost, the parish vicar, the father confessor, the capuchin, the housekeeper, and a yellow and green guest room as well as a room for the servant. Maids and servants were housed in sleeping chambers. The provost's servant wore livery. Oil paintings of the Pope and the Emperor, as well as Abbots Martin II , Meinrad Troger and Cölestin Vogler hung in a room . Stucco work was done by Johann Stiller and Franz Joseph Vogel . From 1781 to 1785 the historian Hugo Schmidfeld was provost.

In addition to the three bear heads of the Knights of Berau, the entrance coat of arms shows that of Abbot Franz Schächtelin , who was also provost of Berau. The property of the provost's office was very extensive and required some staff, a hunter, a gardener, a caretaker and two servants. They lived here until the abolition on July 4th, 1807. The last abbot Berthold Rottler wanted the provost's place to be transferred as a place of residence, but this was refused. The servants were compensated, the inventory and furniture were auctioned in four days. In 1813 a farmer bought the Propsteigüter with the economy. The stately building still exists today. It has been renovated and divided into apartments.

Emmerich von Stall

In 1651 the hermit and alchemist Emmerich von Stall lived close to the provost's office, and in 1656 he built a (no longer existing) chapel.
