Meinrad Troger (born August 21, 1696 in Rheinfelden ; † October 14, 1764 in St. Blasien ) was the third prince abbot of St. Blasien in the Black Forest from April 28, 1749 to October 1764 .

Life

Troger was born in Rheinfelden, which at that time belonged to Habsburg front Austria . He was the son of Anton Troger and his wife Ursula (née Engelberger). In 1714/1715 Troger studied at the University of Innsbruck . He took the religious vows in 1717 and was ordained priest in 1722 . After teaching at a university in Gengenbach and Salzburg , he returned to the St. Blasien monastery. At the University of Salzburg he was dean of the philosophical faculty in 1726/27.

From 1739 to 1746 he was provost of the Provost of Klingnau, which was resigned and rebuilt during his tenure as provost. His predecessor, Prince Abbot Franz Schächtelin , issued the building contract . At the same time he was prior of the Sion Monastery from 1740 to 1746 , which had belonged to the St. Blasien Monastery since 1725.

After his election as abbot (April 24, 1749) he promoted science and the next generation, including his successor Martin Gerbert .

In February 1762 the papal envoy Giuseppe Garampi visited the monastery of St. Blasien and extensively praised the monastery and abbot in his travelogue. He writes about Troger that he was “a person with an easy-going attitude, agile and affable. .... His government is praised and the monks hold him in high regard. ... A title of glory of this prelate is the cultivation of the studies which he initiated with the greatest zeal ... ”. "This is the first monastery known to us that conducts the studies systematically."

From 1749 to 1764 Troger was also the prior of the Benedictine priory in Oberried , which had been subordinate to the St. Blasien monastery since 1724.

During Troger's term of office, a number of construction activities of the Sankt Blasien monastery fell. In 1755 he acquired shares in the Albbruck ironworks . Troger also sponsored the sculptor Joseph Hörr , who also worked many times for the monastery. In 1762 he initiated the construction of Bürgeln Castle , for which the master builder Franz Anton Bagnato was hired . In 1763 he determined the building site in Grafenhausen for the construction of the Grafenhausen rectory .
