Joseph Hörr (born November 29, 1732 in Blasiwald -Althütte, † March 9, 1785 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German sculptor and wood carver .

Life

Hörr was a student of the sculptor Johann Joseph Christian in Riedlingen and worked with him on the execution of the choir stalls of the Minster of Our Lady in Zwiefalten . After his apprenticeship he returned to St. Blasien , where he became a secular official ("officialis secularis") of the St. Blasien monastery as a sculptor . In St. Blasien, Hörr created several works of art, especially for the New Minster , which was destroyed by fire in 1768. In St. Blasien, Hörr first came into contact with later companions such as Franz Joseph Salzmann and Johann Christian Wentzinger .

In 1763 Hörr came to Freiburg im Breisgau after the end of the major construction work in St. Blasien , where he was employed as an academic sculptor at the university and received academic citizenship the following year. He bought the house at the red gate on Freiburg Munsterplatz . In 1766 he carved a picture of the Virgin Mary for the altar of the second imperial chapel of the minster, which was taken in 1778, but is no longer preserved. Around 1768 he and Anton Xaver Hauser created a baptismal font in the cathedral, the design of which was made by Johann Christian Wentzinger .

After the fire in St. Blasien in 1768, he was involved in the reconstruction of the St. Blasien monastery and cathedral . His execution of the prospectus of the Silbermann organ is documented, in St. Blasien the putti from the pulpit ceiling, the lamb lying on the book with seven seals from the high altar, various reliefs and models for various picture decorations are attributed to him. Due to the varied history of the monastery and its furnishings, most of the objects that Hörr created there are now lost. The frontispiece of the second volume of Martin Gerbert's Vetus liturgia Alemannica from 1776 is a view of the cathedral facade and the convent. It was drawn by Hörr and engraved by Peter Mayer .

In 1781 the travel writer Friedrich Nicolai attested that Hörr had made “the best sculptural work on the new domed church of St. Blasien”. In the years 1782/1783 Hörr delivered the plans for the conversion of the former Gymnasium Academicum into the city's first dedicated university library .

In the early morning hours of March 9, 1785, Joseph Hörr died of "dropsy of the chest or pulmonary addiction", probably corresponding to pulmonary silicosis or silicotuberculosis .
