The Augustinermuseum in Freiburg im Breisgau is one of the most important museums on the Upper Rhine with a renowned collection of art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque as well as 19th century paintings. It is also the Diocesan Museum of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

The building, a former Augustinian monastery with a Gothic cloister , is currently being converted into a modern museum by the architect Christoph Mäckler . The former church building has been reopened on March 23, 2010 after many years of renovation.

The Unterlinden Museum in Colmar and the Basel collections (the Strasbourg and Karlsruhe holdings are each distributed over several museums) are comparable and complementary in their importance for art and culture in the Upper Rhine region from the Middle Ages to the 20th century .

The Museum of City History in the Wentzingerhaus , located on Münsterplatz , is a department of the Augustinian Museum . The items shown there come from the fundus of the Augustinian Museum.

history

The Augustinermuseum goes back to the municipal collections founded by Mayor Otto Winterer in the 1880s .

The conversion of the monastery, previously used by the Freiburg Theater , into a museum building, designed by Rudolf Schmid in 1909 and begun in 1914, had to be stopped in 1915 due to the First World War . From 1919 it was continued by Karl Gruber and opened in November 1923, however, compared to the original plans for a central Freiburg museum building, it was severely restricted and in some cases extremely provisional, as the financial resources of the city administration were very limited after the war. The building was in this provisional state until 2010. Due to contamination by wood preservatives , some of the museum's wings had been closed for years and were largely unusable.

Directors

Redevelopment

A general renovation of the building has been taking place since 2004. The Frankfurt architect Christoph Mäckler was commissioned with the planning . The duration of the work was originally set at 5 to 8 years. The city is investing 60 million euros with the support of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Archdiocese of Freiburg.

First construction phase 2004 - 2010

In the first phase of the renovation, the church building was renovated by 2010. First of all, archaeological excavations and structural measures to stabilize the church building were carried out. In 2007 the roof structure of the church building was removed. The woodwork, which was heavily infused with wood preservatives, fungi and other pests, was de-staked and decontaminated , and damaged parts supplemented or restored. In the summer of 2009 the roof structure was erected again. During this time the church building was a major construction site.

The installation of an elevator has made the church barrier-free since then, which also makes it easier to transport exhibits. Circumferential galleries were built in. Additional exhibition space was created in the basement for special exhibitions in all Freiburg museums and in the attic for the picture gallery. A café was set up on the ground floor, in the former treasury and in the cloister.

Facade where the cornice fell down

In June 2010, the exhibition hall in the Augustinian Museum was opened with a joint double exhibition by the Freiburg Museum of New Art on the work of Katharina Grosse and her mother Barbara.

The Association of British Travel Writers recognized the new Augustinian Museum as one of the best new tourist attractions in the world in December 2010. In the “Best Foreign Project” category, the Freiburg Museum was presented as one of six attractions and approved for evaluation.

For spatial and conservation reasons, many of the exhibits could not be shown even after the end of the first construction phase of the renovation (March 2010). The graphics collection with around 70,000 sheets and the everyday and folk culture department were temporarily not on view, and the arts and crafts were only very sketchy.

In August 2019, 10 to 15 kilograms of the glued-on cornice came off at a height of about 14 meters over a length of about 4 meters of the nave and fell on the sidewalk. Nobody got hurt. The material comes from the first phase of the renovation in 2010. As the cause has not yet been found, the ledge was completely removed at the end of 2019.

Second construction phase 2012-2016

Construction of the construction crane for the 2nd construction phase in July 2013

The second construction phase was originally supposed to start in 2010. In the Salzstrasse , the gatehouse, built in 1920 with historical set pieces and now dilapidated, was replaced by a new building. In addition, an old building was renovated, where u. a. the graphic collection was set up and for the first time an adequate delivery for art transports was made possible. According to the Freiburg municipal council, this construction phase was originally supposed to cost 8.5 million euros. The project, which was to be planned in detail at the beginning of 2011, was put to the test at this time due to financial deficiencies in the city's cultural budget. In mid-February the second construction phase was decided by the local council, in 2012 the gatehouse was demolished and the site was then archaeologically examined. The new building in Salzstrasse was erected from 2013 to summer 2016 and opened with the first exhibition in mid-September 2016. It cost around 16 million euros.

Third construction phase since 2016

In the third construction phase, since August 2016, the enclosure building is being renovated and three medieval vaulted cellars are being converted into exhibition rooms. To do this, the café and the cloister had to be closed again. The cost of this was estimated at 30 million euros. The federal government is providing 6.7 million euros for this as part of the National Urban Development Projects program . More rotten beams were found in the roof structure than expected. At the end of 2018, another fungus, the white pore sponge , was discovered in the already restored roof structure of the nave . In May 2019, the first reports on the newly discovered damage were available and it became clear that the renovation will take around two years - until 2022 Template: future / in 2 years. At the end of the year, a damage cadastre and a rehabilitation concept should be available. A fungus was found in all three construction phases. The city has not yet been able to provide any information about the costs. Nevertheless, the archeology exhibition will take place for the city's anniversary. In March 2020, the city announced that the wood pests are expected to cause additional construction costs of 16.56 million euros and that the museum would not be Template: future / in 3 yearscompleted before 2023 . The original plan was to preserve as much of the building's historical substance as possible during the renovation. In order to minimize the fungal risks, however, more substance is now being removed than planned.

exhibition

The west facade of the church building has got a new entrance and opens up to Augustinerplatz with a foyer.

The sculpture hall with the prophets from the cathedral

In the church building, which was converted by Mäckler, there is a sculpture hall, the central area of which is reserved for the original stone figures from the Freiburg Minster . Panel paintings and wooden sculptures frame the hall in cabinets on the ground floor and on the gallery on the upper floor. Works by Matthias Grünewald , Lucas Cranach the Elder , Martin Schaffner and Hans Baldung can be found here, as well as the "Christ on the Donkey" (1350/60) or the Passion Altar of the house book master (around 1480). Medieval stained glass from the Freiburg Minster are presented on two levels. When it is dark, the imperial windows can also be seen from the outside in the new entrance porch. The art-historical concept comes from Detlef Zinke .

In the choir of the former monastery church there are sculptures, altars, paintings and small sculptures from the Baroque era. Large figures look into the room from the niches of an eight-meter-high " case ". A narrow, 14-meter-long showcase runs like a ribbon along the side wall. It houses small sculptures and paintings. The showpiece is the organ prospect from the Gengenbach Abbey Church, which was created in the 1720s, with an organ built in 1935 by the Freiburg company M. Welte & Sons . 19th century paintings are gathered in the attic: Eugen Bracht , Anselm Feuerbach , Hans Thoma , Franz Xaver Winterhalter and others devote themselves to landscape painting, portraits and genre scenes, allegorical and religious themes. A total of around 1,400 square meters in air-conditioned and barrier-free rooms are available for the presentation of art.

The newly created basement of the former Augustinian Church houses a modern exhibition hall of almost 450 square meters, which makes it possible for the first time in Freiburg to show special exhibitions according to international conservation standards.

The treasury contains works of gold and silversmiths that were created between the 9th and 18th centuries. They are part of the Freiburg Cathedral Treasury. These and other works from the collections of the Archbishop's Diocesan Museum and the Adelhausen Foundation will only be on view in the historic basement rooms after the renovation in 2020 has been completed.

An extensive collection of southwest German coins (including Freiburg coins, Rappenmünzbund , Vorderösterreich ) and one of the few collections of coin dies are currently not on display . The Black Forest collection, which is based on Oskar Spiegelhalder's first collection and encompasses the areas of handicrafts, rural life, folk art, clocks and reverse glass paintings , is also currently not on display. Due to a lack of space, Emil Ehrensberger's watch collection will also only be exhibited temporarily during the renovation. Since the House of the Graphic Collection was opened , it has been on display in the showcases on the staircase for treasures .

In March 2018, four valuable paintings, including three loans, were probably scratched with a blunt object during opening hours. They can probably be restored. As a result, more works are to be shown behind glass and video surveillance is also being considered.

House of the Graphic Collection

House of the Graphic Collection

The House of the Graphic Collection was built in the second construction phase . It comprises a new building by the architect Christoph Mäckler, which looks like two buildings due to its structure and connects to the former convent building as well as including a listed old building on Salzstrasse. The museum shop and the cash desk area are located there. The (almost) windowless new building is characterized by the inscription "Augustinermuseum", which can be read letter by letter from top to bottom in four rows. The letters of different scripts were donated. The donors are mentioned on a plaque on the ground floor. In addition to the large gate entrance for the delivery of the museum, there is a small foyer and the museum education workshop on the ground floor.

In addition to the exhibition hall and offices, there is also a presentation room on the upper floor. There the visitor can look at graphics from the depot on request. It houses the museum's 70,000-sheet graphic collection. The central spiral staircase made of sand-colored, polished concrete not only connects the individual floors, but also this building with the main building of the museum. With the thirty showcases embedded in the wall, the staircase of jewels becomes an exhibition space. At the end of 2018, a temporary escape staircase was built near the choir, which will remain in place until the end of the third construction phase.

Museum organ

The organ 2010

As musicological work of art under monument protection standing organ of the museum consists of the historical brochure from 1732 to 1733 from the former abbey church of the Monastery Gengenbach , which is in the museum since it opened in 1923, and in 1935 built church organ of M. Welte & Sons . It had to be dismantled as part of the static renovation. In the course of 2009, both the prospectus and the instrument were extensively restored. After removing several brown coats of paint from the 19th century, the prospectus was restored as much as possible to its original state; in the upper part there is a painting by Paulus Seeger . The restoration of the organ was carried out by the Waldkircher Orgelbau Jäger & Brommer company following an EU-wide tender . The instrument was stripped of later ingredients and restored to its original sound condition from 1944. Initially, the organ was accessible to groups of visitors as part of guided tours. Since the end of 2018 it has been possible to look into the organ through a window from the back of the House of the Graphic Collection. It is played every Saturday lunchtime during a half-hour concert.

From July 2016 it happened that the organ made high notes by itself. Three concerts had to be canceled and from mid-November there were no more concerts at all. One suspected an electronic problem, because a new building technology went into operation in July. After the electronics of the organ were shielded against high frequencies, the error no longer occurred.
