Hans H. Hofstätter

Hans Hellmut Hofstätter (born November 17, 1928 in Basel ; † November 8, 2016 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was an Austrian art historian who worked in Freiburg im Breisgau.

Live and act

Hofstätter studied art and literary history and classical archeology at the universities of Basel, Munich, Paris and Freiburg from 1949 and received his doctorate in Freiburg in 1955 under Kurt Bauch on the development of Art Nouveau in France ( The emergence of the new style in French painting around 1890 ) . Afterwards he was assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Mainz under Friedrich Gerke and from 1961 to 1972 chief editor of the Holle Verlag . During this time he held several visiting professorships, including in the USA. From 1973 to 1993 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine for Christian art and art studies Das Münster . From 1974 to 1992 he was the managing director of the municipal museums in Freiburg im Breisgau and director of the Augustinian museum . In 1986 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Freiburg .
