Kurt Bauch (born November 25, 1897 in Neustadt i. Meckl. , † March 1, 1975 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German art historian .

Life

After serving as a soldier in World War I , Kurt Bauch completed a traineeship at the State Museum in Schwerin from 1919 to 1921 . From 1922 he studied art history at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate under Hans Jantzen in 1923 and completed his habilitation in 1927 . In Freiburg he taught as a private lecturer until 1932, then at the Art History Institute of the University of Frankfurt am Main . Since May 1, 1933 , he was a member of the NSDAP . In the summer semester of 1933, Kurt Bauch was appointed to the chair for art history at the University of Freiburg.

In 1932 a friendly relationship began between Kurt Bauch and Martin Heidegger . The correspondence has been published since 2010. In 1939 he turned down a call to the University of Hamburg after he had been promised an expansion of the Freiburg institute. Bauch was a member of the National Socialist Lecturer Association and was a science officer there.

He was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1939 and served as a corvette captain in the navy until 1944 . He then continued to teach in Freiburg; In 1962 he retired.

From 1958 Kurt Bauch was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Dutch painting, especially Rembrandt, was one of Bauch's most important fields of research .
