Wilhelm Schlink (art historian)

Wilhelm Schlink (born December 25, 1939 in Bielefeld ; † August 29, 2018 ) was a German art historian .

Life

Wilhelm Schlink was a son of the Protestant theologian Edmund Schlink (1903–1984); his younger brother is the lawyer and writer Bernhard Schlink (* 1944). Wilhelm Schlink grew up in Heidelberg, where his father worked as a professor from 1946.

Wilhelm Schlink studied medicine, then five semesters of Law, eventually switched to art history Schlink and in 1968 at the University of Wuerzburg with the thesis "The Cathedral of Saint Mammès of Langres . Investigations into the ecclesiastical architecture of northern Burgundy in the late 12th century. ” PhD with Herbert Siebenhüner . He then worked as an assistant at the University of Hamburg , where he received his habilitation thesis “ Saint-Bénigne in Dijon . Investigations on the Abbey Church of Wilhelm von Volpiano (962-1031) ”was qualified as a professor .

In 1974/75 he was a professor at the University of Kiel , in 1975 he became a professor at the University of Frankfurt and in 1979 at the University of Trier . From 1984 on he taught at the Art History Institute of the University of Freiburg , where he retired at the end of the 2004/05 winter semester .

He gave guest lectures at the University of Leipzig (1985 and 1990), at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1992), at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (1988) and at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (1998).

His research areas included the architecture and visual arts of the Middle Ages in France, the art history of the Upper Rhine, the history of the art history discipline in the 19th century, especially Jacob Burckhardt , self-portrayal of the fine arts in the 19th and 20th centuries, and methodological exchange processes in the history of art in France and Germany.
