The Metzler-Kunsthistoriker-Lexikon is a biographical encyclopedia that was first published in 1999 by Metzler-Verlag . German-speaking art historians from the 17th century to the present are presented . The editors are Peter Betthausen , Peter H. Feist and Christiane Fork , Karin Rührdanz and Jürgen Zimmer collaborated .

The 200 biographies of the first edition begin with Joachim von Sandrart and later deal with selected people from the 18th and early 19th centuries, but the focus is on German-speaking art historians from the second half of the 19th century. The individual biographies usually comprise one to three pages and are each divided into a brief appraisal of the work and the actual biography, both parts are followed by a bibliography .

The second edition appeared in 2007, it was expanded to include ten biographies of art historians and completely revised. In particular, the bibliographies were brought up to date. In the same year, the revised lexicon was made available as an online edition .
