Georg Himmelträger (born August 4, 1929 in Karlsruhe ) is a German art historian .

Life

Georg Himmelbahnen spent his childhood and youth in Karlsruhe. For several generations the family had owned the furniture factory Gebr. Himmelheber (founded in 1768 as a carpenter's workshop in Karlsruhe); there he also completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. His mother was the Karlsruhe women's rights activist Kathinka Himmelträger, the Karlsruhe local politician Luitgard Himmelträger his grandmother. He was too young to be a soldier in World War II ; he was able to evade a last attempt to draft him into the Volkssturm in March 1945 .

After the war he finished his school years with the Abitur. Georg Himmeluchter studied art history at the Universities of Kiel , Munich and Freiburg , there under Kurt Bauch . In 1954 he received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. The topic of his dissertation, published in 1963, is The East Choir of the Augsburg Cathedral .

In 1955 he married the art historian Irmtraud Jo Himmelheber. The opera singer Liat Himmelträger is his daughter.

1956 to 1959 he worked at the State Office for Monument Preservation in Stuttgart ; he was involved in the inventory of the Künzelsau district . The inventory volume Die Kunstdenkmäler of the former Oberamt Künzelsau appeared in 1962.

Himmelhub moved to the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe. There he curated the Türkenlouis exhibition in 1955 .

In 1965 Georg Himmelträger became a curator at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich. There he was in charge of the furniture and wooden utensils, musical instruments, games and glass painting departments. He conceived and curated exhibitions such as Biedermeier Art 1815–1835 (1988), Games (1972), Small Furniture (1979). Most recently he was deputy general director.

Georg Himmelheber's main research interests are furniture, arts and crafts from the Biedermeier period, as well as arts and crafts from historicism. His bibliography includes 215 articles and books.

In 2010, on the occasion of Himmelheber's 80th birthday, a symposium entitled “The Art of German Furniture” took place in the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts.
