Willibald Sauerländer

Willibald Sauerländer (born February 29, 1924 in Waldsee ; † April 18, 2018 in Munich ) was a German art historian .

Life

Sauerland studied from 1946 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and 1953 Munich in the subject Art History under Hans Jantzen with a dissertation on "The Gothic figure portal in France" doctorate . From 1954 to 1959 he worked as a lecteur allemand and tour guide in Paris . From 1959 to 1961 he was a research assistant at the University of Marburg .

After a stay as a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1961/62), Sauerländer completed his habilitation and between 1962 and 1970 was professor at the University of Freiburg i. Br. , Then 1964/65 and 1970 visiting professor at New York University and from 1970 until his retirement in 1989 director at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich. One of his students was Hans Ottomeyer . In 1973 Sauerländer was elected a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was also a founding member of the Academia Europaea in 1988 , and in 1991 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Further stays abroad after his retirement followed in 1984/85 (Visiting Professor, Harvard University ), 1989 (Visiting Professor, Berkeley ), 1991 (Mellon Lecturer, Washington) and 1992 (Visiting Professor, New York).

Since 1993 Sauerländer wrote occasionally as a freelancer for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In 1994 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
