Peter Geimer (* 1965 in Kettwig ) is a German art historian .

Life

Peter Geimer studied art history , modern German literature and philosophy in Bonn , Cologne , Marburg and Paris from 1987 to 1992 . In 1997 he received his doctorate with a thesis on The Past of Art. Subsequent strategies in the 18th century at the Philipps University of Marburg. Between 1997 and 2004 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and at the Collaborative Research Center for Literature and Anthropology at the University of Konstanz . From 2004 to 2010 he was senior assistant at the professorship for science research at ETH Zurich and from 2005 to 2009 he was also a member of the national research focus on image criticism at the University of Basel. Geimer completed his habilitation in art history at the University of Basel in 2008 . In 2010 he received the professorship for historical image studies and art history at Bielefeld University .

Since the 2010/11 winter semester he has held the chair for modern and contemporary art history at the Free University of Berlin , and since 2012 co-spokesman for the DFG-Kolleg research group “BildEvidenz. History and Aesthetics ”.

In 2009/2010 he was a fellow at the International College for Research on Cultural Technology and Media Philosophy (IKKM) at the Bauhaus University Weimar , and in 2015 he was a fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK) Vienna.

Geimer has been writing regularly for the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung since 2007 .

Geimer's research interests include the theory and history of photography , the visual representation of history, the "art and cultural history of the thing (relics, remains, stuff)" and the history of science .
