The March 1 is the 60th day of the Gregorian calendar (61st in leap years ), thus remain 305 days by year end.

In ancient Rome this day was originally the beginning of the calendar year on which the sacred fire was lit in the temple of Vesta . However, when in 153 BC When the Roman consuls moved their rule to January 1st, the beginning of their term of office was also the beginning of the new year.

  • 1694 : In a heavy storm, seven English warships of a naval formation under Rear Admiral Sir Francis Wheeler sink off Gibraltar , including the flagship Sussex , which is believed to be carrying a secret cargo of ten tons of gold or 100 tons of silver, and two other ships of the line, the Cambridge and the Lumley Castle . Rear Admiral Wheeler is one of the 823 victims of the disaster.
