Aachen Congress
- September 29th : The Aachen congress of the great powers Russia , Austria , Prussia , France and Great Britain begins. The rulers and high-ranking representatives of their states advise on measures to combat revolutionary democratic development in Europe. The Aachen Congress is considered the first congress of monarchs . Participants are Tsar Alexander I accompanied by Karl Robert von Nesselrode , King Friedrich Wilhelm III. von Prussia, Emperor Franz I of Austria accompanied by Christian Günther Graf Bernstorff , Clemens Wenzel Lothar Fürst von Metternich and Karl August Fürst von Hardenberg , as representatives of England Arthur Wellesley Wellington and Robert Castlereagh and, on the part of France, Armand Emmanuel du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu
- October 9th : During the Aachen Congress, a treaty is signed with France that includes an immediate withdrawal of the occupation troops and reduces the payment of reparations from 700 to 265 million francs.
- November 15 : With the admission of France , the Holy Alliance becomes the pentarchy of the major European powers Russia , Great Britain , Austria , Prussia and France. It is declared at the Aachen Congress.
- November 21 : The Aachen Congress ends with a declaration by the five major European powers. The Congress of Monarchs proclaims the solidarity of the participants in order to guarantee peace, faith and morality.
Territory of the German Confederation
- May 26th : Bavaria receives its second constitution by edict , which replaces the one from 1808 and contains the formation of a representative body. Munich becomes the seat of the Bavarian State Parliament and the new Archdiocese of Munich-Freising.
- May 26th : With the new Prussian Customs Act of 1818 , the different excises in Prussia are replaced by a uniform external tariff.
- August 22nd : Baden receives a liberal constitution drawn up by Karl Friedrich Nebenius , which provides for an assembly of estates and makes the Grand Duchy a constitutional monarchy .
- December 8th : After the death of Grand Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich , his uncle Ludwig I takes over the reign of the Grand Duchy of Baden .
- The Neue Wache in Berlin is completed.
Sweden
- February 5 : After the death of Charles XIII. the former French general Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte rules as Charles XIV. Johann . He founds a new dynasty in Sweden .
- May 11th : In Stockholm, Charles XIV. John is crowned King of Sweden. The former Marshal of France founded the royal house of Bernadotte .
Chilean War of Independence
- February 12th : Chile , as captain general part of the viceroyalty of Peru , proclaims its independence from Spain .
- March 16 : Cancha Rayada's surprise in the Chilean War of Independence brings the Spaniards a victory over the Andean army commanded by José de San Martín . Because of the higher losses of the victorious colonial troops compared to the rebel army, the battle is rated as a Pyrrhic victory .
- April 5 : With the defeat in the Battle of Maipú against Creole patriots under the leadership of José de San Martín and Bernardo O'Higgins , the Spanish rule in Chile ends .
- June 3 : Bernardo O'Higgins decreed that the word Spaniard must be replaced by Chilean in all secular and ecclesiastical administrative acts and that the indigenous population should also be named Chileans without distinction .
United States of America
- October 19 : With the Treaty of Old Town , the Chickasaw ceded their northern territory, today's western Tennessee , to the USA.
- October 20 : In the London Treaty , the USA and Great Britain agree on the 49th parallel as the border between Canada and the United States up to the " Stony Mountains ". The Oregon Country to the west of it is said to be shared by the US and Canada . This leads to further disputes.
- December 3 : The southern part of the previous Illinois Territory is incorporated into the USA under the name Illinois as the 21st member state . The northern part is added to the Michigan Territory .
Rurik expedition
- August 3 : The Russian Rurik expedition comes to an end after three years without the hoped-for discovery of the Northwest Passage .

- January 3rd : The last occultation of one planet by another takes place until the year 2065 (Venus covers Jupiter). However, no observations of this event have survived; it could only be observed from the Pacific Ocean ( occultations ).

- February 17th : Karl Drais receives the French patent for the draisine .
- March 2nd : Giovanni Battista Belzoni discovers the burial chamber in the Chephren pyramid , but finds only an empty sarcophagus in it .
- October 18 : King Friedrich Wilhelm III. cancels the University of Duisburg . The university scepter and significant parts of the university library go to the newly founded Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .
