Life
Steffeck, the son of a private artist interested in art, attended the Berlin Art Academy while he was still in high school . In 1837 he entered the master class of the horse painter Franz Krüger , later in the studio of Carl Joseph Begas . In 1839 he went to Paris , where he was a student of Paul Delaroche for two months , but especially studied the work of Horace Vernet . From 1840 to 1842 he stayed in Italy .
After his return he mostly painted pictures of hunting and animals. Beyond this genre, his large historical painting Albrecht Achilles in the fight with the Nuremberg people for a standard from 1848, which was characterized by the brilliance of the coloring and the masterful representation of the horses. In 1864 the Prussian state acquired the painting for the National Gallery in Berlin .
Steffeck specialized more and more in paintings of horses at rest and in motion and in sports pictures and horse portraits. In addition, he created numerous small-format portraits, several other large historical paintings, many watercolors, lithographs and etchings as well as some bronze animal sculptures. His pupil Max Liebermann reported that Steffeck painted his small-format equestrian portraits, which he sold for six Friedrichsdor , in just one session, so that the sitter could often take the picture home wet.
Since the beginning of the 1850s, Steffeck devoted himself increasingly to teaching; one of his students was Hans von Marées . In 1859 he became a professor at the Berlin Art Academy, and in 1880 he was appointed director of the Königsberg Art Academy .
In 1890 he suddenly died of a stroke . He was buried in the French cemetery on Chausseestrasse in Berlin. The portrait medallion for his tombstone was created by the sculptor Friedrich Reusch , a professor from the Königsberg Academy of Art.
