Prince Hans Heinrich XI. from Pless

Hans Heinrich XI., Count of Hochberg, Prince of Pless, Baron von Fürstenstein (born September 10, 1833 in Berlin , † August 14, 1907 at Albrechtsberg Castle , Dresden ) was a freelance civil servant , mining industrialist and cavalry general of the Prussian Army . From 1905 he was also Duke of Pless .

Life

As the son of Count Hans Heinrich X. von Hochberg, he was the second prince of the Principality of Pless . In 1905 he was made Duke of Pless for himself by Kaiser Wilhelm II . He was known as "the old man" or "the old duke".

Hans Heinrich attended the Pforta State School and on October 1, 1850, joined the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps of the Prussian Army . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on December 14, 1852 , and in 1855, after the death of his father, he was given leave of absence from the regiment à la suite . Then he took over the management of the family estates and the family's mine holdings. He set up welfare institutions for the miners of his coal mines in the Waldenburg mining district and their families. These were - for its time - so progressive that they were presented at the 1904 World Exhibition in St. Louis as workers welfare on the Fürstensteiner Gruben Sr. Highness of the Prince of Pless, Waldenburg in Silesia / Institutions for promoting the welfare of the workmen on the Fürstenstein mines of His Serene Highness the Prince of Pless, Waldenburg, Silesia, Germany were presented.

He was Oberstjägermeister under the emperors Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II. The hunting horn is also known as the Fürst-Pless-Horn because of his services to hunting . From 1863 he was a member of the Prussian manor house . From 1867 to 1884, as a member of the Reich and Free Conservative Party, he was also a member of the Reichstag . In 1890 he became a member of the Prussian State Council .

From 1873 to 1875 he had a French architect build a small palace complex in the historicizing style in Berlin-Mitte , Wilhelmstrasse  78 to Vossstrasse  2, right next to Otto von Bismarck's Reich Chancellery , which was clearly modeled on the Louvre and the Loire castles (like Amboise ). Shortly after the Franco-Prussian War, this caused a great sensation and incomprehension in Berlin . Because of the numerous chimneys on the roof, the Berliners called it the "Chimney Sweep Academy". In a contemporary publication in 1876, the Prince Pleß Palace is included as a sight.

Hans Heinrich XI. raised bison . For example, pure-blooded lowland bisons, which can be traced back to a bull and four cows, were brought to the Pless forests in 1865 as a gift for Prince von Pless from the Białowieża jungle . They were bred here in isolation for a few decades. The bull Plisch with the stud book number 229, which was brought back to Białowieża from Pleß in 1936, is of great importance in today's conservation breeding. Almost all of the bison of the lowland line currently living in the Białowieża jungle are descended from him .

He was made Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle by Kaiser Wilhelm II on December 24, 1889 . From December 23, 1896 until his death he was chancellor of the order .
