A chancellery is an authority with the task of administering the affairs of the order . The historical name for the head of authority is Order Chancellor (often also Grand Chancellor in personal union ). Today it is mostly about departments in the administration of the head of state .

tasks

One of the tasks of an order chancellery

  • the examination of the proposed person to be awarded, whether the requirements for the respective medal in the respective level are met and whether the person to be awarded has the personal requirements
  • Commissioning the manufacture of the medals
  • The execution of the award certificate
  • partly the organization of the handover ceremony
  • partly the publication of the award ceremony
  • Maintaining the list of medal holders and the archives of previous mediation processes
  • Reclaiming the Order in the event of withdrawal, death or promotion in accordance with the Order's statutes

The German Imperium

Between 1871 and 1918 there were no imperial orders in Germany. The award of medals was a matter for the individual member states. These had each set up chancelleries, which were typically organizationally linked to the respective ministry of the royal house . The Royal Prussian General Order Commission existed for Prussia in Berlin.

Weimar Republic

According to Article 109 of the Weimar Constitution (WRV) of August 11, 1919, medals and decorations were no longer allowed to be awarded by the state. Due to this prohibition of orders , there was no order chancellery in the office of the Reich President .

time of the nationalsocialism

In the time of National Socialism , the prohibition of orders was removed and a religious office was set up in the presidential chancellery under Heinrich Doehle .

Federal Republic of Germany

Today's Ordenskanzlei is an organizational unit in the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany and is located in Berlin.

It is responsible for examining suggestions for awards, especially when awarding the Federal Order of Merit in the last instance.

Other decorations donated, approved or recognized by the Federal President in the fields of science, the arts, sports and rescue services are examined by the Office of the Federal President.

Heiko Holste is currently the head of the responsible department 14 (as of March 2018).
