Grand Chancellor

Grand Chancellor is the title of high official in state administration, in orders of knights and at universities .

Grand Chancellor in State Administration

In some European monarchies the Grand Chancellor was or is a confidante of the ruler who was entrusted with notarization. He prepares the documents , signs them and keeps them. Occasionally the holders of high offices in the administration carried the title of "Grand Chancellor", for example in Prussia in the 18th century .

Grand Chancellor of the Order of Knights

In the order of knights, the grand chancellor is the first secular official and keeper of the seal .

Grand Chancellor of Universities

At some universities the Grand Chancellor is the highest representative of the sponsor or founder of the institution. At Catholic universities , according to the Apostolic Constitution Sapientia Christiana, the respective local bishop is in principle their Grand Chancellor (Latin: Magnus Cancellarius ).
