A Catholic university is a university sponsored by the Catholic Church . As a rule, the sponsors are foundations of individual dioceses , bishops' conferences , and occasionally the Pope ( Pontifical University ). Must be distinguished from religious colleges .

Apostolic Constitution

The identity of a Catholic university is determined on the papal side by the Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities Ex Corde Ecclesiae of August 15, 1990. There it says, among other things: “As a university, every Catholic university is an academic community which, in strict and critical methods, makes its contribution to the protection and promotion of human dignity and, at the same time, the cultural heritage through research and teaching and through the various services it offers provides local, national and international communities for their benefit. "

International cooperation

The worldwide association of Catholic universities is the Fédération Internationale des Universités Catholiques (FIUC), the International Federation of Catholic Universities, founded in 1924 . 192 Catholic universities and colleges in 53 countries belong to it.

In addition, a World Congress of Catholic Universities (WCCU) was held in 2011 in Ávila, Spain.
