The Pontifical University of Salamanca ( Spanish : Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca UPSA ) is a papal university in Salamanca , Spain .
The university has the same roots as the University of Salamanca . The liberal governments of the 19th century caused theology and canon law courses to be excluded from the University of Salamanca. Pope Pius XII founded a new university in the same city in 1940 to restore these two faculties and gave it the rank of papal university.
The university offers its 8,500 students 34 bachelor's degrees, 24 master's degrees and 11 doctoral programs (as of 2008).
