The University Pablo de Olavide (Spanish: Universidad Pablo de Olavide ) is a public university in Seville ( Spain ).

University profile

It was founded in 1997 , making it one of the youngest public universities in Spain. The UPO has around 12,000 students, making it smaller than the older and better-known University of Seville (Spanish: Universidad de Sevilla ). The UPO campus of around 140 hectares is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Seville, the capital of Andalusia .

The UPO bears its name in honor of the Hispanic-Peruvian enlightener and politician Pablo de Olavide y Jáuregui (1725–1803), who worked in Seville as town planner and reformer of the University of Seville. The naming is intended to express the desire to open up to Latin America ; this is implemented u. a. through cultural and scientific collaborations with Latin American universities.

The campus was established during Franquism in the early 1950s. From 1956 until its dissolution in 1978, the Universidad Laboral "José Antonio Primo de Rivera" was located there, where workers or their children could take an apprenticeship, master craftsman or advanced training course.
