The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya ( UPC , Spanish Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña , Polytechnic University of Catalonia ' ) is a technical university in Barcelona .
The first direct forerunner of the university was the Institute Politècnic Superior , founded in 1968 . In March 1971, the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona was founded on this, which then took on its current name in 1984 because of its spread throughout the region.
The UPC is now one of the largest technical universities in Spain with around 33,000 students and 2,500 professors and scientists. It has 16 faculties and seven affiliated faculties, whose campuses are in Castelldefels , Manresa , Sant Cugat del Vallès , Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú in addition to Barcelona .
With the MareNostrum, a supercomputer is located on the university campus. When it was commissioned in 2004, it was number 4 on the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers.
The university is a member of the TIME network, which enables students to take part in a double degree program with leading universities abroad.
