François Stahly

François Stahly (born March 8, 1911 in Konstanz , † July 3, 2006 in Paris ) was a French sculptor from Germany .

Life

Stahly was born in Konstanz in 1911 as the son of the Swiss painter and photographer Léopold Stahly and the German Elisabeth Kraft. His first name at that time was "Titian". At a young age in Winterthur he became familiar with the theories of the Bauhaus School. After finishing school, Stahly completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer and lithographer with Walter Cyliax in Zurich and attended courses at the Zurich School of Applied Arts . There he got to know Max Bill , Hans Fischli and Hans Arp . In 1931 Stahly moved to Paris . There he studied at the Académie Ranson with Aristide Maillol and Charles Malfray . Stahly developed his sculptural activity in close collaboration with his artist friend Étienne-Martin . In 1938 Stahly became a member of the " Témoignage " group. His first sculptural works were shown at the 1934 World Exhibition in Paris. In the same year he married the Frenchwoman Claude Favre with whom he had three children.

In 1939 he became a French citizen and joined the French Army. From then on he called himself "François". In 1944 he met Henri-Pierre Roché , who bought most of his sculptures.

In collaboration with other sculptors, he created the sculptural decoration of churches in France and Algeria . Since 1958 he had shared an office with other artists in the Paris suburb of Meudon . In 1959, François Stahly was a participant in documenta II in Kassel .

Stahly was best known for his woodwork from tree trunks to roots. But he also created works in stone, bronze or stainless steel. He became internationally known with a teak - Labyrinth front of the Parliament of the State of New York in Albany .

In 1967 Stahly returned to France. His lifelong preoccupation with the teachings of the mystics Gurdjieff and Jiddu Krishnamurti led him to found the " Ateliergemeinschaft Haut Crestet " together with his son Bruno and daughter Florence in the Vaucluse department . In 1973 his wife Claude Stahly died in Meudon . In 1975 he married the sculptor Parvine Curie .

Stahly has received numerous prizes and awards. In 1953 he was awarded the gold medal of the Milan Triennial and in 1957 the Grand Matarazzo Prize of the Sao Paulo Biennale . Since 1992 Stahly was a member of the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts . Stahly is regarded as an important representative of the abstract monumental sculpture of the 1960s and 1970s.
