Claude and François Stahly's studio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The studio of Claude and François Stahly is a building complex in the French community Crestet in Vaucluse . It has been registered as a Monument historique since 1988 and bears the Patrimoine du XXe siècle label .

The buildings were created from 1966 to 1970 for the Franco-German sculptor François Stahly as an exhibition space, home and studio . In 1966, Claude and François Stahly decided to set up a large workshop and a house in Provence, surrounded by nature. The place is a wooded property with oak and pine trees away from the village of Crestet, near Vaison-la-Romaine .

The originality of the project lies in the idea of the “collective studios” with which the sculptor François Stahly experimented since 1952, first in Meudon for several years , then in the United States , particularly in Aspen (Colorado) . The principle is to share a creative workshop with other, younger artists who come freely to work on the masters' works, but who can also develop their own research in a climate of learning and constant exchange.

The architect is Bruno Stahly (born 1937), the son of Claude and François. It is an open modern architecture. The buildings with a skeleton made of reinforced concrete are geometrically arranged around two inner courtyards. The windowless outer walls with some air slots also serve as protection against the mistral wind , which blows particularly hard in this part of Provence.

After renovation as part of a general restructuring project, the complex, which was acquired by the Center national des arts plastiques in 1983 , now serves as a contemporary art center with artist studios, creative areas, and exhibition and conference rooms.
