Crestet Castle

Crestet is a French municipality with 412 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Arrondissement of Carpentras .

geography

Crestet is about three kilometers southeast of Vaison-la-Romaine , between the Ouvèze River and the Dentelles de Montmirail . Other surrounding communities besides Vaison are Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison , Entrechaux , Malaucène , Gigondas and Séguret . The next major city is Carpentras in the south, 18 km away .

The Groseau brook flows along the eastern border and flows further north as a left tributary into the Ouvèze.

On the north-south axis from Vaison-la-Romaine in the direction of Carpentras, the route départementale D938 runs. To the east of the community center, the D54 branches off towards Entrechaux.

history

The history of the municipality goes back to the first century. The castle was built in 840 and served as a place of refuge for the bishops of Vaison , who were built in 1160 by Raymond VI. de Toulouse were expelled from Vaison-la-Romaine. With the approval of the bishops, the master glazier Aliot de Montvin built a glazier ( Verrerie ) in 1426 in the field of "La Regardette", which was later renamed "La Verrière". In 1865 a brick factory was opened, which was financially ruined forty years later. In 1905 a bridge was built over the Ouvèze for the Orange – Buis-les-Baronnies narrow-gauge railway, which operated until 1953 . During the Second World War , German troops occupied the place and quartered in the castle.

Attractions

Crestet is a typical small mountain village in Vaucluse with houses in the Renaissance style. The place is dominated by a castle from the 9th century, which served as a refuge for the bishops of Vaison. The parish church also dates from the 9th century and is dedicated to Saint-Sauveur. The restored chapel of the Annunti women from the 16th century is located at the entrance to the village .

tourism

The 69-kilometer GRP Tour des Dentelles de Montmirail hiking trail runs through the municipality and goes around the Dentelles de Montmirail.
