The Dentelles de Montmirail are a rocky landscape in southern France in the Vaucluse department , south of the town of Vaison-la-Romaine and west of the much higher Mont Ventoux, consisting of several small, parallel mountain ridges, all of which are oriented from southwest to northeast . To the northwest of the Dentelles, the Ouvèze flows in a wide arc into the Rhône .
etymology
Dentelles translates as lace (as in crocheted or bobbin lace ) and alludes to the sharp and pointed shape of the numerous small peaks, often pierced by rock windows. Montmirail comes from the Latin mons mirabilis .
geography
The origin of these mountains is a limestone layer that was pressed into an almost vertical position during the Jura and later formed by erosion .
The chain sequence begins in the southwest with the Grand Montmirail ( 555 m ), then, separated by the Col d'Alsau , the Dentelles Sarrasines with the Rocher du Turc ( 627 m ), and again separated by the Col du Cayron ( 396 m ) , Le Cayron ( 529 m ) and Les Trois Yeux ( 539 m ). The Dentelles de Montmirail are completed in the northeast by their highest point, the Crête de Saint-Amand with a height of 730 m . The Dentelles de Montmirail, which extends over just 8 km, are popular with hikers and rock climbers alike. In total, there are over 600 routes, mainly in the upper levels of difficulty up to 8c (UIAA X + / XI-) and with lengths of up to 90 meters. There are signposted hiking routes and bike tours.
At the foot of the Dentelles on the west side of the Rhone are the well-known wine towns of Séguret , Sablet , Gigondas , Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras . South of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the municipality of Beaumes-de-Venise are the prehistoric Grottes d'Ambrosi and the Romanesque chapel Notre-Dame d'Aubune .
Flora and fauna
The vegetation consists mainly of evergreen species . In addition to the various types of oak , you can also find stinging winds and the wild pistachio at their northern limit. A large number of irises ( Iris nains ) bloom in spring , followed by rush lilies and French flax .
The whitebeard warbler prefers to live in the holm oak forests , whereas the Provence and Velvet Warbler are very adaptable. The high rock walls are home to the classic bird species of the Mediterranean limestone cliffs. A few Egyptian vultures still nest here, but after the belly eagle disappeared , the eagle owl is the only significant bird of prey in the range. In winter you can watch the fluttering flight of the wall creeper on the walls , an alpine bird that hovers over the warm rocks of the small Provencal massif.
