Linum narbonense , rarely also called French flax , is a Mediterranean species from the genus flax ( Linum ).

Linum narbonense is an upright herbaceous plant with woody roots and heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The gray-green leaves are linear-lanceolate, very pointed, 7 to 20 millimeters long and arranged alternately.

Their upright flowers are in compound, flat, terminal inflorescences . The petals are light to dark blue, rarely whitish, and have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. They fall off in the afternoon. The approximately round seed capsules have a diameter of 8 to 12 millimeters.

Their chromosome number is 2n = 18, 2n = 28 or n = 15.

Occurrence

The plant is native to the western ( e.g. Spain and Balearic Islands ) and central Mediterranean region (e.g. Slovenia and Istria ), where it grows on dry meadows and in open bushes, preferably on moist soils.

Systematics

Linum narbonense was first published by Carl von Linné in 1753 , but the type epithet goes back to Johann Bauhin , who mentions it as Linum luteum Narbonense , while narbonense refers to the region around the southern French city of Narbonne , where the species is native, among other things.

In the genus Linum narbonense belongs to a species group around the perennial flax ( Linum perenne ) in the Linum section .
