Notre-Dame d'Aubune is a three-apse chapel in the Provençal Romanesque style near Beaumes-de-Venise in the Provencal department of Vaucluse .

location

The chapel stands at the foot of a cliff with a spring ( Les Grottes d'Ambrosi ), which was venerated in ancient times, in the southwest of the Dentelles de Montmirail, about 2 km west of the village of Beaumes-de-Venise on the edge of the vineyards.

history

The chapel is one of the outstanding examples of Romanesque architecture in Provence. Their style is - similar to the church of Saint-Restitut , the priory Notre-Dame du Val des Nymphes near La Garde-Adhémar , the cathedral of Avignon , the chapel Saint-Quentin in Vaison-la-Romaine and the church of Notre- Dame-du-Lac in Le Thor - inspired by antiquity . The apse of the chapel dates from the 11th century, the bell tower from the 12th century. The chapel was later enlarged and finally closed in the 17th century with an adjoining hermitage (now private property).

Notre-Dame d'Aubune has been classified as a Monument historique since November 19, 1910 . Extensive restoration work was carried out in 2007.

Legend

According to tradition, the chapel was built by Charlemagne or Charles Martel after a victory over the Moors in a place called Cimetière des Sarrasins . The devil later tried to destroy the chapel by a rock fall, which was stopped by the Virgin Mary - the rock above the chapel is called Rocher du Diable .

architecture

The older part of the chapel consists of a single -bay choir and three apses in the simple style of the early Romanesque of the 11th or early 12th century on the east side. Numerous holes in the outer masonry testify to the attachment of the scaffolding. In addition, signatures (VGo) of the builder Hugues from the mid-12th century have been preserved, which can also be found on the Notre-Dame de Nazareth Cathedral in Vaison-la-Romaine and the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Saint-Paul-Trois -Châteaux and the Sainte-Anne Cathedral in Apt .

The bell tower built on a square floor plan from the years 1160/80 is characterized by antique style elements, fluted pilasters and window pillars over the entire height as well as capitals with acanthus ornaments .

Furnishing

Five objects in the church are classified as monument historique: the altar with retable from the 17th century, the marble altar table from the 10th and 11th. Century and three paintings, including The Plague Vow of 1629 , which commemorates the plague of 1628 in Provence.
