The plague vow of 1629 ( French Voeu de la peste de 1629 ) is the title of a votive image in the Notre-Dame d'Aubune chapel in the French community of Beaumes-de-Venise . It commemorates the plague in Provence in the 17th century and wasclassifiedas a Monument historique in 2012.

description

It is an oil painting from the 17th century that is eight feet high and five feet wide . It currently hangs on a wall in the north aisle of the chapel and is attributed to a Père Calvet (Father Calvet), a likely local painter.

In the upper part you can see the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus surrounded by the traditional plague saints Michael , Rochus of Montpellier , Sebastian , Genoveva of Paris , Franz von Paola and Christophorus . They are also the patron saints of various chapels in the Beaumes-de-Venise area, built and consecrated after the plague epidemics of 1586, 1629, 1630.

In the middle of the painting the population and in the lower part the coat of arms of the municipality are shown. The coat of arms shows in an unusual way only one instead of three dew crosses , which represent the three Christian communities of Beaumes, Aubune and Saint-Véran.

In the lower left corner there is the following inscription:

"PESTIS CAUSA BALMENSES / VOVER (U) NT ET VOTA DEO VIRGINI (QUE) / RED (D) IDERU (N) T 1629"

"Because of the plague, the people of Beaumes took vows , and they fulfilled the vows to God and the Virgin in 1629."

history

During the plague epidemic from August to December 1628, which claimed 500 sick people and 200 dead, that is one sixth of the population, the inhabitants of Beaumes-de-Venise took a vow . They promised that the day after the feast of St. Sebastian to go in a procession to the Notre-Dame d'Aubune chapel and put up a painting there to commemorate the vow. The chapel and caves in the area were used as makeshift hospitals at the time . Thereupon the consuls of Beaumes decided to donate a painting:

Community. »

“And for the eternal commemoration of this vow, a picture is made on which the Holy Virgin Mary is painted above, who holds her son Jesus in her arms, plus a multitude of people, men and women on their knees and with folded hands Present before God and the Holy Mother with St. Anna, St. Peter, St. Nazaire, St. Roch and St. Sebastian, with the vow text as a reminder at the bottom of the picture. Otherwise the painting should be seen as clearly as possible; the painting will then be placed in honor in the Notre-Dame d'Aubune church, with two white wax torches in front of this painting to remain there forever, and should the torches mentioned become very old, others will be made and at the foot of this painting set up, and torches are set up on the coat of arms of the municipality.

- Acte de 1629 (arch, coll. Part., B de V, 1629)

The ex-voto was set up in the chapel on November 16, 1632.

Since the painting is threatened with decay, the municipality of Beaumes-de-Venise applied to the private foundation Fondation du patrimoine to have it restored along with two other listed paintings in the chapel.
