Beaumes-de-Venise - town view

Beaumes-de-Venise ( occitan . Baumas de Venisa or Baumo de Veniso ) is a southern French wine village and a municipality with 2409 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Vaucluse department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . The inhabitants are called Balméens .

location

Beaumes-de-Venise is located on the Canal de Carpentras south of the small mountain range of Dentelles de Montmirail in the center of the former county of Venaissin . Closest cities are Carpentras (approx. 10 km south), Orange (approx. 25 km west) and Avignon (approx. 33 km south-west).

history

Beaumes-de-Venise was roughly on the border of the settlement areas of two Celtic tribes - the Cavares and the Vocontier . Even Gallo-Roman traces were discovered. The earliest mention of the medieval place name Ad Balmas comes from the year 993. In the 12th century, parts of today's municipality belonged to the Abbey of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon . After the end of the Albigensian Wars (1229), Raymond VII of Toulouse left his possessions on the left bank of the Rhône, including the Venaissin, to the Holy See , whose owners later resided in Avignon from 1309 to 1377 . During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) the area was devastated several times; in 1572 the Protestant leader François de Beaumont seized the city.

The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture . The population increase in the last few decades is related to the development of viticulture.

economy

Most of the agricultural land is used for viticulture . The vineyards are within the protected designations of origin Beaumes-de-Venise , Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise and Côtes du Rhône . Most of the winegrowers also cultivate areas of the nearby Côtes du Luberon appellation . Olive, apricot, cherry and apple trees were planted on partial areas.
